Role of Cultural Heritage Sites in Promoting Sustainable Tourism and Economic Growth

Abstract

Cultural heritage sites play a crucial role in preserving historical, cultural and architectural assets while contributing significantly to tourism development and economic growth. The present study examines the role of cultural heritage sites in promoting sustainable tourism and economic development through the analysis of secondary data obtained from scholarly articles, reports and publications issued by international organisations. The study explores the economic, social and cultural contributions of heritage tourism, including employment generation, income creation, destination competitiveness, community participation and cultural preservation. The findings reveal that heritage tourism serves as an important driver of sustainable development by attracting domestic and international visitors, stimulating local businesses and supporting regional economic activities. The study also identifies challenges such as overtourism, commercialisation and conservation pressures that require effective management strategies. The analysis highlights the importance of integrating heritage conservation with sustainable tourism policies to ensure long-term economic benefits while safeguarding cultural resources for future generations.
