Nagarathar’s Banking System – A Historical Study
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Nagarathars, widely known as the Nattukottai Chettiars, form one of South India’s most renowned traditional banking communities. Originating from the Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu, this community established an intricate and well-organized indigenous financial system that flourished across South and Southeast Asia between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. This paper explores the historical trajectory, operational framework, ethical dimensions, and socio-economic influence of the Nagarathar banking tradition. By employing historical, ethnographic, and comparative research approaches, the study demonstrates how their trust-based kinship networks and innovative credit instruments facilitated business growth and trade long before the advent of formal banking institutions. The findings emphasize that the Nagarathar financial model continues to hold valuable lessons for present-day cooperative and microfinance structures.
