Abstract

The dairy economy in Pudukkottai District of Tamil Nadu represents a critical sector that significantly contributes to the livelihoods of local farmers and the overall economy of the region. This study aims to examine the multifaceted dynamics of the dairy industry in this district, highlighting the socio-economic impacts on rural households, the challenges faced by dairy farmers, and the potential pathways for sustainable growth. Utilizing a mixed-methods research approach, the investigation combines quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires with qualitative insights gained from interviews with key stakeholders, including dairy farmers, cooperative society members, and agricultural officers. The results reveal that dairy farming serves as a pivotal source of income and employment for rural households, with a substantial percentage of respondents relying solely on dairy for their livelihood. However, the study also identifies several pressing challenges, such as inadequate access to veterinary services, fluctuating milk prices, and insufficient infrastructural support, which impede the productivity and profitability of dairy operations. The exploration of these challenges underscores the necessity for targeted interventions and support systems that can enhance the resilience of dairy farming in the district. Furthermore, the analysis of milk production trends indicates a potential for growth in the dairy sector, contingent upon the adoption of improved practices and technologies. Consequently, the research advocates for the implementation of capacity-building programs to educate farmers about best practices in dairy management, along with policy reforms aimed at strengthening cooperative structures and improving market access. The potential benefits of such initiatives extend beyond individual farmers to foster community development and bolster the regional economy. Ultimately, this study contributes to the broader understanding of the dairy economy in Tamil Nadu, providing evidence-based recommendations for stakeholders seeking to enhance the sustainability and profitability of dairy production. The findings have significant implications for policymakers, agricultural extension services, and development practitioners aiming to improve the livelihoods of dairy farmers in Pudukkottai District and similar agricultural contexts.
