Economic Development in the Kongu Region: Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Trends
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Kongu region, a historically significant and economically vibrant area in Tamil Nadu, has undergone substantial economic transformation over the centuries. This study examines the key drivers of economic development in the Kongu region, focusing on agrarian expansion, industrialization, and trade networks. The region's rich agricultural base, particularly in cotton and turmeric production, has played a crucial role in shaping its economic trajectory. The emergence of textile and engineering industries, along with infrastructure improvements, has accelerated growth, making Kongu a major contributor to Tamil Nadu’s economy. Additionally, the role of entrepreneurship, migration patterns, and state policies in shaping economic opportunities is analyzed. The research employs historical and economic methodologies to assess the impact of globalization and liberalization on the region’s economy. Findings suggest that sustained growth has been achieved through a synergy of traditional industries and modern enterprises. However, challenges such as environmental degradation, water resource management, and labor market dynamics persist. Understanding the economic development of the Kongu region provides insights into sustainable regional growth models and policy implications for other emerging economies.
