Main Article Content
Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive economic analysis of multiple cropping systems in the Nagapattinam district, known for its diverse agricultural practices and significant contribution to the regional economy. The research investigates the efficiency and productivity of various cropping patterns employed by local farmers, focusing on the financial viability and sustainability of these systems in the face of changing climatic conditions and market dynamics. Utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, data were gathered from a stratified sample of farmers across different socio-economic backgrounds, allowing for a robust examination of input-output ratios, cost-benefit analyses, and overall profitability associated with multiple cropping. The findings reveal that farmers engaged in multiple cropping systems experience enhanced income stability and reduced economic risk compared to those practicing monoculture. Moreover, the analysis indicates that specific combinations of crops, such as paddy with pulses and vegetables, significantly optimize resource utilization and improve soil health, thereby contributing to long-term agricultural sustainability. Additionally, the study highlights the role of government policies and support systems in promoting multiple cropping as a viable agricultural strategy, emphasizing the necessity for tailored interventions that consider local agronomic practices and socio-economic contexts. The implications of this research extend beyond the immediate economic benefits, suggesting that enhancing multiple cropping systems could play a crucial role in addressing food security, improving livelihoods, and fostering resilience among farming communities in Nagapattinam. Overall, the economic analysis presented herein underscores the importance of adopting diversified cropping strategies as a means to bolster agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region, thereby contributing to a more stable and prosperous agricultural landscape.
