E-Commerce and Sustainable Business Development: Emerging Practices and Future Directions in India
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between e-commerce and sustainable business development in India, focusing on emerging practices, challenges, and future directions. The research adopts a descriptive and analytical approach based entirely on secondary data from government reports, institutional databases, and published studies. India's e-commerce market increased from US$67 billion in 2021 to US$125 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$345 billion by 2030, demonstrating the growing economic significance of digital commerce. The findings indicate that digital payments, green logistics, sustainable packaging, reverse logistics, artificial intelligence, circular-economy practices, and MSME participation are becoming important components of sustainable e-commerce development. The expansion of consumers in Tier-II and Tier-III cities further demonstrates the potential for inclusive digital growth. However, packaging waste, last-mile emissions, resource consumption, and rapid-delivery models remain significant sustainability challenges. The study concludes that integrating technological innovation with environmental responsibility and social inclusion is essential for building a resilient and sustainable e-commerce ecosystem in India.
